JT and Harry Belafonte at the Urban Peace Awards

The Los Angeles Office of Advancement Project presented its first annual Urban Peace Awards on September 21, 2002 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. Harry Belafonte, Danny Glover, Sheriff Lee Baca, Cardinal Roger Mahony and Father Greg Boyle hosted the event.

The historic event celebrated “champions of peace” recognizing several dedicated leaders and organizations in the Los Angeles area for making great strides in their quest to end violence and protect those that have had a positive impact on their neighborhoods and communities. Each honoree received the Sankofa Peace Prize, a symbol celebrating their efforts to end urban violence, and restore local communities.
